2024 Flower Bed Project List

Spring has arrived, so it’s only right to get into some outdoor content! I told myself after having to do all of the garden bed clean up from last year that I was NOT focusing so much on my flower beds this season. There’s still so much that I want to do indoors, and I feel like once my attention becomes attached to all things outdoors, I’ll put off the current projects I’m working on inside. There’s a balance I’m sure, but I’m still working on that. So, I opted for changing things up a bit with my front yard garden beds and going for a more low maintenance vibe for my front landscape. By low maintenance I mean throwing out some seeds and hoping for the best. It’s what I’ll call an “organized chaos” garden! Have you heard of a chaos garden? They are absolutely amazing, however, I’m just going to direct sow particular seeds (that I know will do well) and call it a day. But I’ll have some beautiful fresh cut flowers to display on my kitchen table weekly and that makes me excited. We’ll get back to the seeds I’m using in my next blog post.

2024 Front Yard Flower Bed Project List

  • Remove Wood Frames & Plants

I want go to for a more natural edging look. The wood was definitely a good start for my flower beds, but I’ve realized I don’t necessarily like the way it looks. I want a clearly defined line between the grass and where the beds begin. Also the wood doesn’t lay as flat as I’d like, thus causing weeds and grass to grow all around them. Having natural edge seems fairly easy to maintain. I’d be using a manual edger to dig/create the edge shape. I’m going to keep the same shape of the beds that was already created by the wood. This also means I’m saying farewell to the dead shrubs and the liriope that were planted. It’s all coming up!

  • Tree Stump Removal

This is something I can officially check off of my list! There was a large stump in one of the front beds that was just covered with landscaping barrier and mulch. Now I can fully utilize that bed and not have to plant around the stump.

    • Remove Weed Barrier

If you take a look at the above pictures, you can see the weed/landscaping barrier covering the tree stump and also near the weed beam edges. I’ve discovered that I have some really great soil and I want to utilize it instead of just covering it up and having to purchase soil. By removing the barrier I know that I’m taking a huge risk with excessive weeds this season, but I don’t mind. This is really something I want to try.

    • Till Dirt

I have no idea how to use this thing, LOL! But, I purchased it in hopes to use utilize the great soil that I have in my yard. Below is the electric tiller I purchased from Amazon (affiliate link). This tool is going to help loosen compact soil so that I plant my flower seeds easier and also get rid of any weeds from the roots.

So, what are my next year flower bed goals? Plant perennials ONLY! Or as much many as I can. Stay tuned for a future post (probably towards the end of the season) where I discuss my goals for a PURPLE PERENNIAL GARDEN. I’m excited to use the time this year to plan for next year!
